What is Automobile ?

Automobile is self-movable vehicle which is driven by an engine (gasoline or diesel). Well the word "Automobile" came from two words, one from Greek word "autos" which means self and from the Latin word "mobilis" which means movable and the both words together means that a vehicle which moves itself.


From the day of invention of automobile, they are used for transportation of passengers and goods from one place to another in the form of bus, car, scooter, etc.
Generally an automobile consist of frame which is the support for all the parts like engine, transmission system, body etc, and further the frame is supported by the wheels and tyres. We all know that no vehicle can move without wheels so we can say them "the legs of an automobile" whereas engine is the heart of an automobile. Transmission system transfer the power of engine to the wheels using gearbox, differential.

Brief history of Automobiles:

In 1769, the first steam powered tricycle was introduced by Captain Nicolas Joseph Cugnot. Later years, in 1807, Nicephore Niepce and his brother developed the world's first internal combustion engine which they called "Pyreolaphore".

In 1879, Karl Benz ( inventor of modern automobiles) filed a patent for his first engine and then after six years i.e in 1885, he developed self-propelled tricycle with internal combustion engine.
In same time, Gottlieb Daimler, a German engineer, developed first engine running using petrol (gasoline) which he used to drive a two wheeled automobile.
Later years, the design and performance of the automobiles was getting improved and production was also increased year by year. Today, there are hundreds of automobile makers. Some of the best are follows:
